Love this! I am just getting involved with Anthony's way of seeing traveling, and as it resonates so much with my own, he represents kind of a spiritual guide, as Chris McCandless per se. To travel is to enjoy the simplicity of life and to learn. Not to get the Instagram photo or only visit the gourmet restaurant. ☕️🌷
I was casually scrolling my home page and the title of this piece caught my eye. Then I saw your Substack name and smiled (we’re Substack title twins!). Bourdain was a real one—a fucking rough and tumbled gem of a human being. He just saw things so clearly and was never afraid to call bullshit on any of it. For that reason, he was always a major comfort read and watch for me, and, like you said, his words have stuck with so many of us. And because of that, I like to think his wisdom and spirit lives rent free in a lot of our minds and inspires us to take action to fully live life in ways maybe he couldn’t. If you haven’t seen Roadrunner yet, it’s definitely worth the watch (despite the AI voice controversy). Thanks for sharing, Andrew!
Fantastic read. Weird how you can feel so attached to a guy you never knew. I tried to capture some of that travel philosphy of Bourdains in a piece of my own. Have a suss if you get a moment, it's called Take the Local Bus.
I read Kitchen Confidential earlier this year! I absolutely loved it.
I really admire Anthony Bourdain's attitude towards life - the curiosity and respect with which he met everyone and everything. I think it's a wonderful quality that we need more of in the world. It's sad that he's gone, but like you said, it's best to honour him by opening ourselves up to new experiences and simply teetering in the unknown. :)
I didn't know much about him just bits and pieces from here and there. This read was so inspiring and convinced me to watch and read every thing that he was involved in. Thank you for writing this!!
I would be lying if I didn’t say your thoughtful writing made me emotional - your words, Andrew, encapsulated how AB made so many people feel and the impact he left on this world. Kitchen Confidential will forever be one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Fucking love Bourdain. On bad days the way he articulates how he meandered through life give me hope.
Same bro!!!
